For as long as I can remember I’ve always had a creative side, but when I became a mom that side consumed my entire being (behold, I am a Pinterest mom). It all started with BooBoo’s 1st birthday (and has slowly grown from there. Check out …), see my BooBoo is a wild one (I could tell early on she was going to be a spitfire) so when it came down to planning her 1st birthday party I knew it had to be just as wild as her personality.
I give to you BooBoo’s Hot Pink Zebra Party!
Due to the small size of our house (and large guest list) at the time I decided to convert the garage into party central for the special occasion (I hung black curtains on a cable for the back drop, but mostly to hide all the unsightly garage junk). I got the idea to do a candy bar from browsing Pinterest so my mom graciously let me borrow her assortment of apothecary jars (beverage dispensers, tables and chairs) for the event. I bought the table linens from some wholesale website (can’t remember the name) and then made the tiered dessert stands from Dollar Tree candlesticks and plates (another Pinterest idea)hot glued together.
My niece is deathly allergic to peanuts so I made sure to research and buy only peanut free candies. The candy for the candy bar included: black licorice (Yuck! I never could enjoy licorice but others do so I bought it), shimmery pink, black and white gum-balls, pink Sixlets, white saltwater taffy, pink malt balls and Hugs Hershey Kisses. I found the thumbprint cookies on Pinterest and recreated them at home to be peanut free (they’re just Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix dyed hot pink and topped with Hugs Hershey Kisses) and the cakes too (Pillsbury Strawberry cake mix frosted with Pillsbury French Vanilla frosting and drizzled with Pillsbury Milk Chocolate frosting).
One of my favorite crafts for this party was creating this hot pink high chair skirt, matching cushion and birthday crown (so glad I taught myself to sew).
Thanks again to Pinterest for inspiring me to make this first birthday sign (I used metallic scrapbook markers, gel pens and a black poster board all found at my local Michaels store).
The party was a hit and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
Thanks for reading along.
XO,
Ris
